SEMPER FIDELIS

SEMPER FIDELIS ⋆

Our detachment is named in honor of USMC Sergeant Angel Mendez (1946 - 1967)

USMC Sergeant Mendez was killed in action during Operation Desoto on March 16, 1967, in the Duc Pho District of South Vietnam. Sergeant Mendez was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross, the second-highest decoration any Marine can be awarded, for gallantry under fire in the act of saving the life of his commanding officer, Lieutenant Ronald D. Castille. While the Navy Cross is a recognition of Sgt. Mendez’s uncommon valor, in recent years — in light of new, objective, and accurate circumstantial evidence — we have requested that Sgt. Mendez’s award of the Navy Cross receive an upgrade to the Medal of Honor.
